Making Photoshop Shapes - 2
Number 2 in making Photoshop shapes is with the Elliptical Marquee Tool.
- Create a new file with File > New.
- Name the file Shape 1.
- Set Width to 1000 pixels.
- Set Height to 1000 pixels.
- Set Resolution to 300 pixels.
- Color Mode RGB Color.
- Background White. OK.
- In the toolbox, click on the foreground colour to open the Color Palette.
- Check the box for Only Web Colors.
This offers a very limited range of colours but the colours will reproduce more accurately on the web. Choose a mid-red and press OK. - In the Layers panel, click on the 'Create a new layer' button.
- In the toolbox, choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool.
- Dragging the cursor across the background will draw an oval.
To draw a perfect circle, hold Shift as you drag the cursor. This will work with the Rectangular Marquee Tool as well to draw a perfect square. - To fill with the blue, go to Edit > Fill. Under Contents Use, choose Foreground Color. OK.
- Press D for the default colours in the toolbox. Black should be on top as the foreground colour.
- Go to Edit > Stroke.
Set Stroke Width to 10 px Set Location to Inside. OK. - Remove the selection with Select > Deselect.
- At the bottom of the Layers panel, click on the fx button and drop down to Bevel and Emboss.
- Under Structure Style, choose Inner Bevel.
- Set Depth to 1000 and Size to 136.
For Direction, click on Up. - Play around with some of the other settings as well just to see what they can do.
- When satisfied with the effect, press OK.
Here is a basic round shape which can be used as a web button or name plaque. When it comes to making Photoshop shapes, the Layer Styles box contains a 1001 different possibilities. If the shape is saved in Layers, then the effect settings can be changed any time.
