Photoshop Filter Gallery
Images can be modified with a vast range of filters through the Filter Gallery.
- Open Image number 01.jpg in the
Samples-Various
folder.
- Go to Filter > Artistic > Poster Edges.
This takes us to the Gallery. Many filters automatically open the Gallery.
It can also be opened with Filter > Filter Gallery.
- The filter selected will have its thumbnail highlighted and the result is in the large Preview window.
- The Preview image can be moved around with the Hand tool. Its size can be changed with the + or - symbols or with the percentage pop-up menu in the bottom left corner.
- Button A will hide the thumbnails and expand the Preview area.
- All the filters available in the Gallery are listed below the thumbnails.
There is a second full list via the arrows at B.
- Every filter has its own sets of controls at C.
With the Filter Gallery, it is possible to apply several filters on top of each other and preview the result.
- With the Poster Edge filter selected, click on the New Effect Layer icon.
Choose Neon Glow, also in the Artistic category.
The new filter is also applied to the image and its name is added to the list.
- Click on the New Effect Layer icon again.
From the Distort category, choose Diffuse Glow.
- The order at which the filters are applied can be changed by dragging a filter up or down in the list.
- A filter can be hidden by switching off its eye icon, or it can be removed altogether by dragging it to the Trash.
- The filter selected will have its thumbnail highlighted and the result is in the large Preview window.
- A filter can be applied to just a section of an image by making a selection first, then going to the Filter Gallery.
- When dealing with a high resolution image, it can save time to select a small portion of the image with the Rectangular Marquee Tool, experiment with the filters and then apply them to the whole image.
- Not all filters are to be found in the Gallery. Some have their own dialogue boxes. This one is found under Filter > Pixelate > Crystallize.
