Photoshop Gallery
How it was done

Some important Photoshop assistance was needed with this image.

  • The main landscape was virtually a straight shot, using a full-frame fish-eye lens to give the scene the curvature.

  • The feather was photographed by being held against a blue sky. Nobody in their right mind would want to select a subject like that from a different colour background, if it could be avoided.

If an image is going to be a cut-out and laid over another image containing a mixture of colours, then photographing the subject against a white will make it easier to cut-out and blend in.

  • The fingers were erased and the stork of the feather extended a little.

  • The feather was positioned on the sky and much of the surrounding blue also removed.

  • The blending mode of the feather layer was changed to Lighten.
As a result the two blues merged into each other quite well, but the blue of the sky and the blue around the feather were not exactly the same.

  • An eyedropper marker was attached to the image, just outside the edge of the feather.
The colour readings of the blue sky in the main image were noted.

  • With the feather layer active, the Selective Color dialogue box was opened.
Under Colors - Blues small adjustments were made to the sliders to give a perfect match between the two blues.

Here we see a finished picture.
Although the blue of the sky is different from the blues above, the blue around the feather can still merge in perfectly.
