A Plastic Tomato in Action
These plastic tomatoes were popular in cafés in the 1960s as dispensers of tomato ketchup. It was always important to make sure the top was well secured and nothing was blocking the spout, otherwise great amusement could be had by all spectators. The idea was to make it squirt sauce, operated by an invisible hand.
- The container was held up on the end of a rod. This way it could be photographed against a proper background, rather than done as a cut-out and add to a background later.
- The red container was squeezed hard and photographed quickly.
- The squirt of tomato sauce was taken from a normal squeeze bottle. It gave the best clean spout of the liquid.
This sort of thing can take quite a few goes to get something looking right. - The squirt of tomato juice was cut out roughly with the Lasso tool and added to the plastic tomato image.
Because they were both photographed against the same green background, merging the two together was made easier.
