An Alarm Clock of Many Colours

photoshop free tutorials

The background was a picture of a window blind, taken out of focus.
An in-focus image could be used and then made out of focus with the Lens Blur filter.

  • The clock was photographed against a white background, then cut out with the Pen Tool.

  • An amount of Radial Blur was applied, centred around the point of the left leg. The idea is to give it the feel of a wild and active ringing motion.

  • The clock was dragged on to the background of the window blind.

  • In the Layers panel, three copies of the clock were made and called 'Red', 'Green' and 'Blue'.

  • With the Red layer active, a Hue & Saturation Adjustment Layer was added just to that layer.
The Hue slider was moved to turn the yellow of the clock to a red. A setting of -45 turned the yellow to a bright red.

  • The Green and Blue layers were given their own Adjustment Layers and their colours were converted to green and blue respectively.

  • The original yellow clock was dragged to the top of the layers stack.

  • Now the three new coloured layers were moved around so that they were dancing.

  • There was no advantage in changing the Blending Modes of the layers here but the opacity of the three new layers was lowered.

How much opacity it used is a matter of taste, but the finished image below has red at 60% with green and blue both at 50%.
