Learn to Photoshop How it was done
- The egg is a goose egg, that being the largest egg generally available. It's surprising how many eggs are not the truely classic eggy shape.
Two small holes were drilled into the egg and the contents were blown out, so any accidents would not be too messy. It was sprayed with gold paint.
- Two photographs were taken.
The cupped hands holding the egg were photographed outside in a bright but soft light. This was fine for the hands but did not produce to good image of the egg so the egg was photographed separately.
- The egg was balanced on a thin tube to keep it away from a background.
- Metallic colours take on the colour of whatever is reflected into them. A sheet of thin gold card was made into a tube and placed around the egg. This gave a good gold colour all around the egg without any nasty reflections of the hands.
- The central area of the egg was somewhat lacking in colour, where there was a gap in the gold reflecting card for the camera to look through.
With a sample from the gold section as a target, some matching colour was added to the central portion of the egg.
- The image of the hands was converted to black and white with Image > Adjustments > Black & White, and left in colour mode.
- The egg was selected with the Pen tool and dragged on to the hands, then resized with Transform.
- Two new copies of the egg were made; one was given a large amount of Gaussian blur, the other was given a slight Gaussian blur. This produced a graduated glow around the egg.
The gold colour was made stronger and richer. - The contrast of the 'hands' background was pepped up.
